Monza
The 2nd leg of the California Monza was a huge success. 129 cars arrived to jockey for series points or just to get ready for the grands. We had 2 rounds of practice, qualifying, heats, lower mains, and mains. Many track records were lowered. A track record at the grands will really be an accomplishment! I would like to personally thank every club member and visitor that played a part in making this a fun event.
Grands Info
The Monza showed us that we are ready to host the grands! We have some last minute work to do, but the Monza really was a good trial run that showed us where we need to tune up a bit.
The health and well being of the families attending the upcoming grands is of the utmost concern to AQMA…
Heat! – Temperatures have been blazing hot and may not taper off before the grands. We had lots of new shade structures up for the Monza, but learned that we need more. So we are ordering more to more than double what we had up last weekend. Further, we are going to double the number of cold water jugs that we had out last weekend and post a sign on them with a number that rings into the snack bar. This will ensure that they are kept cold and full at all times. Feel free to fill up your own bottles with them. We will also put up an enclosed, air conditioned easy up near the on chute to keep handlers and kids cool. Ice will be sold out of the snack bar as well. Please remember to stay hydrated and go indoors often to cool down. Sun screen is not a bad idea either! For the drivers, I would strongly recommend that you get some kind of cooling device for them to wear. Ensure that they stay hydrated and cool, especially before they go out. We will announce times and classes over the PA and public radio system often so you can spend as little time waiting in the heat as possible.
Fires! - While it has been smoky in the valley, there are currently no fires that threaten our event. We have had some “spare the air” days lately, but that is typical for Sacramento in the summer.
Driver Safety! - Finally, to make our track as safe as possible, we are going to remove some steel posts that back up our walls in turns 2 and 4. We already have walls classified as “soft walls” by QMA that consist of an old stock car tire sandwiched by ¾” plywood. But at the last meeting the membership decided to remove the steel posts in these areas and replace them with a second layer of tires and/or soft walls. The areas behind these moveable walls will be chained off to prevent spectators from getting hurt. We will be doing the work this coming weekend, so any locals… we would love to have some help with construction. Work parties will start at 8 AM on Saturday (7/12) and Sunday (7/14).
Parking! – People arriving from out of town can drop their trailers off on Thursday afternoon (7/17). Trailers dropped any sooner will be towed by the state. We will begin moving trailers into place on Friday morning at approximately 8 AM, possibly sooner to beat the heat. We will continue to park trailers and RVs until 8 PM on Friday. Parking will continue on Saturday from 8AM to 8PM. A flyer will be available at the ranger station at the front gate to direct people where to park. Arrive together to park together.
And just an FYI, the track is closed until Novice day of the grands.
