Round 8 of USAC Mopar .25 Midget "Generation Next" Honored John Saunders

This past weekend, the Miami Valley Club located on the grounds of Kil-Kare Speedway in Xenia, Ohio hosted Round 8 of the USAC Mopar .25 Midget "Generation Next" Series. The race also honored John Saunders, one of the founding fathers of the club.

Friday night practice was held from 5 - 8 pm before the drivers hurried to the big track to see some of their friends and mentors compete in the Ignite Fuels Midget race. With 17 cars starting the main, the .25 drivers were treated to an exciting race that saw Toby Alfrey take another win and one of their friends, Cooper Clouse, take second. Over 40 young drivers were brought out on the front stretch to be introduced to the fans and promote their national event on Saturday and Sunday at the 'little track'. Meanwhile the Ignite Fuels Midgets were staged between one and two, ready to race.

"It's pretty exciting to see some of these drivers who just raced with us maybe last year or even last race." said Chad Barr. "They get a lot of training in our series. Then when we have events together our kids love seeing their friends race that maybe raced with them before."

First thing Saturday morning, Club President, Chuck Taylor presented a plaque to Eric Rankine for his leadership and volunteer efforts for quarter midget racing, in memory of John Saunders. Honda classes raced heats and mains and winners celebrated their Round 8 Championships in Mopar Victory Lane. Sunday was DECO/Briggs day. After a short practice, numerous heats and 5 semi's the first main event was Light 'AA. Nine drivers made the main but just 8 cars started the race. Carson Hocevar went wire to wire for the win in memory of John Saunders. John was one of 6 original members who formed the Miami Valley Club back in 1957. The club honors one person, each year, who steps up to assist the club, helps in numerous ways and works diligently to further the sport of quarter midget racing. Others who have received the John Saunders Memorial Award in addition to Rankine are, John Furrey, Larry Eberts, Ellis Shell, Don Fleming, and Kim and Dave Mathias, to name a few. All Light 'AA drivers were presented on the grid with a participation award given by Doug Saunders, grandson of John.

Throughout the weekend, the Miami Valley Club held a bake sale and raffle to benefit long time Region 4 handler, Larry Eberts. Larry, a parts supplier, has helped many drivers and families through the years. He is still suffering from complications that are enabling to have hip replacement surgery. The club made close to $1400. for Larry in addition to splitting two 50/50 raffles that brought in close to $500.

This race also served as the 2nd leg of the Midwest Thunder Series that stops at many Indiana, Ohio and Michigan Clubs throughout the year. Their next event will be June 9 & 10 at Lansing, Michigan.

Total car count for the weekend was 220. The USAC Mopar "Generation Next" Series moves on to Hagerstown, Maryland, for Round 9 "Mason Dixon Shoot Out, June 15 - 17. This event will also serve as the 2nd race of the Dirt Triple Crown.
